Why black PVD coating do not resist wear and tear - Scratches on watch

Why black PVD watches don't resist wear & tear marks and scratches ?

What is a PVD coating?

98% of watch brands use low-quality coating for their black PVD watches, including the most renowned watch brand names

When it comes to scratches on the watch, your beloved black PVD coating watch, for example, you want to make the most of your investment. Finding the right black watch is not always obvious. Here at Wryst, we want to explain the difference between black PVD coating and black DLC technology and how resistant they can be to scratches, wear & tear.

What is the difference between black PVD and black DLC coating…?

What is Black PVD Coating Technology?

PVD is the abbreviation of “Physical Vapour Deposition.” PVD coating is a plasma coating deposition technology. The materials are vaporized under vacuum coating conditions to obtain a PVD coating. A vacuum chamber is necessary to avoid the reaction of the vaporized material with air.

How strong is PVD coating?

This kind of coating for your timepiece should not be your choice, not at all. Unfortunately, it is still used by 98% of brands for their black metal watches. Advice: if you see “Black PVD” mentioned in the specifications of the watch you are about to purchase, then reconsider your options! Any attempt to remove scratches from your black PVD coating watch will fail. Whether you are trying a soft cloth, soft polishing rag, or polishing cloth, it will not change anything. The reason is that the base metal with black color on the casing and covering up the bezel around the watch face is hiding under the raw stainless steel surface, which is much lighter in color.

CHOOSE DLC INSTEAD!

BLACK DLC WATCHES ARE 80 TIMES MORE DURABLE THAN PVD WATCHES

The Black DLC coating explained:

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) used at Wryst Timepieces is a class of amorphous carbon material that displays some of the diamond's typical properties. DLC is the usual choice for coating other materials that could benefit from some of those properties. For example, a coating of only two μm thickness of ta-C increases ordinary stainless steel resistance against abrasive wear, changing its lifetime in such service from one week to 85 years, avoiding scratches on the watch.

The value of such diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings accrues the ability to provide some of the diamond properties. The primary desirable qualities are hardness, wear resistance, and slickness (DLC film friction coefficient against polished steel ranges from 0.05-0.20).

Used in the sold-out limited edition sports watch collection “Airborne” in the previous years, Wryst offered in 2014 the same scratch-resistant black coating for the Wryst Ultimate collection.

An interesteting debate about the difference between the coatings with dlc and the other ones in pvd. But I must say even the pvd black coating have improved these days. They are not like when they first made them several years ago.

Yes absolutely right! I was wearing watches with black PVD coating (IP coating actually) and since I bought one with this DLC you mention I have not had any scratches. Actually, everytime I feel there is imperfections on the case I just wipe it off and the case looks immaculate again. Its perfection...
